Bilingual Vending Machines

Yes, you heard it here first. I'm not sure if these were made specifically to cater to Americans living on military bases in Japan, but I have yet to run into one of these things off base, so I think this may be the case.

See the video clip

As amusing as the English sounds, it really is an effective strategy to make you come back and buy more drinks in the future. It puts a smile on my face whenever I hear it, and what better way to improve your day than to get a shot of caffeine for your stomach and a smile on your face.

I've got a ticket for a Queen concert this coming Saturday in Yokohama. 4th row, and I'm pretty excited about it. Too bad Freddy Mercury is not still with us, but even so, it looks to be a great show.

I saw a TV add for the concert last week and right after that I zipped over to my local Lawson convenience store to get a ticket. While at Lawson I also noticed that Oasis will be coming to Tokyo in late November so I snagged a ticket for that show as well.

I've been planning a trip to Takeyama this winter to get some shots of the thatch roofed houses covered with snow. I've heard it is a must-see here in japan. But all this planning has really lit a fire under me and I may not be able to wait until the snow starts to fly.

So if I can find the time away from work I will see if I can take a few days off and head over there to capture some of the fall color as well.

I'm not sure if it will work out or not, been a little busy at work recently with the start of the fiscal year and the fact that my boss has recently moved back the the States, which means Ii get to do his job as well as mine, at least until a new Director is selected. I've thrown my hat into the ring to get the job permanently, so wish me luck.

Top 10 things you will likely never see during a trip to Japan:

10. Mt Fuji (unless you come here specifically to climb it, or are fortunate enough to be here right after a typhoon)

9. An ATM open after 9 p.m.

8. Anyone using a check to pay for anything

7. Vandalized vending machines

6. A women with black hair, nearly all women (and a lot of men) dye their hair

5. Ninja (Really. I have been looking for 6 years now and still haven't seen one...)

4. A person driving a pickup truck as an everyday vehicle

3. A closed Pachinko Parlor

2. A skyline NOT marred by overhead power lines

1. Road Kill.

Just thought you might want to know...

The last few photos of todays update are of a temple money box I bought while I was up in Yokota selling photos at the Asian Bazaar. I love old things like this. I like to think about the history of th item. What it hsa seen, where it has been...

I wonder how much money has passed through it over the years?

It now sits in my office and I use it to collect all of the 1 and 5 yen coins I get. Who knows, in a few years time I may have saved up enough to quit my day job and buy a one-way Shinkansen ticket to Kyoto...
