I'm afraid this update is going to
be just about as brief than the last as I am still extremely
busy. Not much of interest going on though. Just taking
care of the usual loose ends that seem to form whenever
I go away for awhile.
I did find out that I will be going
to Washington DC next week. I'll be arriving this Sunday
evening and departing the following Friday morning,
so if anyone wants to get together while I am there
make sure to drop me a line before I leave on Sunday.
I'll be staying in the Crystal City Holiday Inn.
In other news, my camera collection
has once again grown.
For a while now I have been hearing
people rave about the results you get when you use Zeiss
glass on an EOS DSLR.
I was up in Tokyo yesterday and low and behold what
did I find?...a display case chock full of used but
perfect condition Zeiss glass.
To make a long story short, I fell off the wagon again
(in a BIG way ) and walked out of the place with the
following:
CZ 135mm f2.8 Sonnar T*
CZ 50mm f1.4 Planar T*
CZ 35mm f2.8 Distagon T*
CZ 21mm f2.8 Distagon T* (These are extremely rare,
I can't believe they had one of these in stock!)
EOS/Contax adapter
If not for the fact that I recently had a few really
lucrative print sales I never would have sprung for
so much gear all at once. (I feel very fortunate that
my hobby is able to pay for itself. I can't imagine
what would have happend if I had decided to take up
extreme ironing instead of photography...)
I can't believe how compact and well build Zeiss lenses
are.... Sharpness, color, and contrast are superb, and
the bokeh is the most beautiful I have ever seen. I
can't wait to go to Kamakura this coming Saturday to
spend a full day putting my new toys through their paces.
As a matter of fact, all of todays photos were taken
with my new Zeiss lenses. (Mostly the 50mm f1.4 and
21mm f2.8)
The only bad thing is that I have to manually focus
and set the aperture. No auto focus with these babies.
But after shooting with them for just a short while
I can see that this may actually be a benefit. Manually
choosing an aperture and manually focusing on the fly
have made my shooting a little more deliberate and I
think that this will do nothing but improve my photography.
Not to say that auto focus is bad.
Not at all.
There are situations where it is essential. (Like the
Yabusame festival I will be attending on May 29th) But
I think these Zeiss lenses are going to become my standard
kit from now on and I will only pull out the auto focus
zooms when I absolutely need them.
In addition to the quality of the Zeiss lenses, the
thing I like the best is how light and compact they
are. My standard photo kit just became a whole lot smaller
and lighter.
