I love Izakayas

7 February 2005

This weekend flew by like an express train at a local stop. Both Saturday and Sunday was spent selling framed prints at a sale on base, but I did manage to get a little R&R in on one of those evenings.

A friend of mine (Pete) who also lives in Yokosuka sent me an e-mail on Friday asking if I had any time open on the weekend to go have a few beers.

I can almost always find time for a few beers, no matter how full my schedule is so we decided to meet up on Saturday evening after he got back from his usual Kendo practice.

(Photos number 2,3,5, 6 and 7 were taken on Saturday night)

He took me to a small local Izakaya run by a guy who used to be closely affiliated with the Yakuza. The guy still has the expected punch perm, but oher than that he seems to have left that life behind. (As much as youc an anyway. I am sure he still ahs plenty of contacts since you never fully walk away from something like that.)

The place is not too far from Yokosuka Chuo station. I'm glad Pete showed it to me because the food was excellent. (I never would have found out about it on my own) It only has three small tables with4 chairs per table and another 8 seats at the counter facing the chef.

There was also a small bar with two stools. The place was quiet enough that we just piled our coats on the bar stools since they were not being used.

Since Pete is very fluent in Japanese I let him take care of the ordering. (The menu is almost entirely in kanji, which is no barrier at all for Pete, but impossible for me.) The first dish he ordered was Octopus and Scallop sashimi complete with some of the most powerful wasabi I have ever had the pleasure to try.

Next came a potato/cheese/vegatable/chicken augraten style dish. Absolutely delicious.

For our third dish Pete just asked that the chef surprise us.

What the chef decided on was a lightly seared (And very rare raw) peppered beef that was sliced into strips and then eaten on a small crouton style cracker with a leaf of lettuce.

Again, absolutely delicous!

The meal was acoompanied by the usual constant stream of "Chu Joki" (Medium sized draft beer) and Lemon Sours.

The meal and conversation was (as is usual when I spend time wth Pete) excellent. I've got to do that kind of thing more often with him.

It looks like I will be taking another business trip to Washington D.C. in March. (As of now thwe schedule is from the 8th through the 10th) So if anyone would like to get together for some beers let me know.

I am sure we can find some good food and drink to enjoy, although finding a chef that used to be in the Yakuza might take a little bit of doing...
