Hakone

24 November 2004

Even though I am headed to Kyoto on Friday, I still took an extra day off from work today so I could squeeze in a trip to Hakone.

And after taking a look at my pictures when I arrived back home this evening I can see it was time well spent.

I didn't have that great of a day though. It started off good, but I made the mistake of having a 500ml beer with my lunch (Ramen of course). While this in itself is not anything bad, the fact that I was focused so much on taking photos that I neglected to keep myself properly hydrated meant that about an hour after eating lunch one hum-dinger of a headache crept up on me and pretty much stayed with me all day.

Even though I tried my best to drink as much water as possible after getting he headache, it still took about 4-5 hours before it started to subside.

I fealt so bad in fact that as soon as I got home I popped a couple of Excedrin and took a nap. After sleeping for about an hour I fealt good enough to get up and take a shower.

Now that I feel somewhat human again I am pecking away here providing you all with an update.

Like I said above, Friday morning I am off to Kyto for 5 days. Earlier this evening I picked up my Shinkansen tickets in Odawara, on my way home from Hakone.

While getting ready to leave Odawara station I came upon an older Western (Australian it turned out) couple that looked a bit lost. I asked them if they needed any help and they both were very releived to finally find someone who was a native English speaker. They wanted to know which train to take in order to get back to the station where their hotel was located. It was a simple enough matter for me to ask someone if the train they were trying to board would stop at their station.

My good dead for the day I guess.

They had talked to a person that worked at Odawara station, but even though that person spoke some English, I guess their Japanese accept was still thick enough to make it hard for them to understand.

Japanese accented English really is it's own sort of language.

Speaking "Katakana" I call it.

Let me explain.

It is when you say an English word in a Japanese way. Such as saying "Beeru", instead of Beer. Or "Makudonarudo" instead of McDonalds. That kind of thing. It sounds a little corny at first, but once you master it you are able to get along quite well here.

I'm not sure if I will have a chance to provide another update before leaving fro Kyoto. It's Turkey Day here tomorrow and I'll be busy cooking a big 18 pound bird and having a bunch of friends over. (I am lazy though and only cook the Turkey. Junko does the rest.)

So most likely the next update will be when I return. Probably on December 1st since I will be arriving back home very late on the 30th. (Wanted to grab one last evening in Gion before catching the Shinkansen back.)

See you all again soon, and get ready for a whole new avalanche of Kyoto pictures! (I know Heather is ready...^_^)

In a cool coincidence of scheduling, Dave, a long time viewer and poster here at Sushicam, is also in Kyoto at this time. So Dave, if you are reading this, I should be arriving at Kyoto station around 10:30 a.m. this Friday. I'll be putting my luggage in a locker at the train station and will be ready to hit the temples and shrines as soon as I get there. I'll pick up my luggage when it is time for me to check into my Ryokan. Let me know when/where you would like to meet. (I'll send you an e-mail as well, just in case you are not reading the updates while on vacation)

Those who enter this months Sushicam Prints Raffle while I am in Kyoto will not see their names added to the list until after I return. Sorry for the dealy, but I'll be too busy soaking up all the sites, doing my best to capture the essence of the place for you all to enjoy. And who knows, maybe some of the photos I take there this time will end up being some of the ones that people choose as their prizes for winning the raffle.
