Prophecy of Disaster

29 December 2004

In a sadly prophetic move, this past December 12th the Japan Kanji Association announced the Kanji of the Year for 2004:

"Wazawai" (Natural Calamity, or Disaster)

How fitting with the epic disaster caused by the recent earthquake and resulting tsunami affecting so many countries.

Last time I checked the death toll was near 70,000.

...I am at a loss for words.

The scope of this disaster is beyond my comprehension.

I did have some e-mail contact with my younger brother (Shayne) today so now I know for sure that he is OK. He was in Bangkok when the tsunami hit.

He's not sure about the status of his apartment in Phuket, but he thinks it was far enough away from the beach that is should have escaped damage.

Just two more days of voting left in the 2004 Asia Weblog Awards. It looks like we have this one in the bag, but I find it hard to get excited about it with everything else going on in the world right now...
