Tsunami

27 December 2004

I can't believe the destruction caused by the tsunami generated by the earthquake off the coast of Sumatra.

Simply incredible.

The amount of energy released by such an event staggers the mind. The entire island of Sumatra moved about 100 feet to the Southwest during the quake.

Think about that...

Really.

Stop and think about it.

The entire Island moved 100 feet.

Once again Mother Nature stands up and bitch slaps us to reminds us who is really in charge.

It really struck close to home for me since my brother had until very recently been living in Phuket Thailand. Him and his family only recently moved up to Bangkok due to a promotion he received.

I'm not sure exactly how high the death toll will rise to over the next few days, (It's at 20,000 plus right now) but even at this point it is a catastrophe of major proportions. A lot of people are suffering right now. My thoughts go out to them.

I knew a lot of people would not be happy with my decision to watermark the wallpapers, but I really could not think of any other way to get around posting high resolution images. I though about an embedded watermark that is not visible (as Heather talked about) but this does not afford enough protection against someone using the image(s) without permission. If anyone out there has any ideas in regards to a workaround on this issue I'd be happy to hear them.

New Years is just around the corner and a lot of people are taking this week off from work. For those that commute to work by train or car this is a great week. But the fun only last a week, then it is back to the same gridlock as usual. Although for me it's not really an issue since I live on the base where I work and my commute is all of 4 minutes from door to desk.

Each year on New Years Eve here in Japan the television networks show a running live stream of scenes from famous temples and shrines all over Japan. And as the clock strikes midnight all the temple bells begin to ring. People line up for the chance to ring the temple bell and usher in the new year.

A lot of people take part in this and temples and shrines are packed with people well into the early hours.

Of course places like Shibuya and Roppongi are packed with people partying in the more modern sense as well.

Both are interesting, and I am having a hard time deciding on which of the two types of celebration to take part in (and photograph). The Temples being illuminated will be nice to see, but the people getting all hosed and acting stupid is also a lot of fun to see (and take part in).

Maybe I'll split the difference and visit a temple a little before midnight but then spend the rest of the night partying in a more modern sense.

Just a reminder. The 2004 Asia Weblog Awards wrap up on 31 December. We have pulled into a pretty comfortable lead, but more votes certainly won't hurt. You can vote up to once per day.
