Drunk naked guy at a Matsuri

7 April 2003

If you live in Japan long enough, you will eventually see some drunk guy running around naked at a festival. I should know because it happened to me last Sunday.

I was up in a place called Hinodecho, a couple of train stops from Yokohama. Hinodecho has a large amount of cherry trees lining the river that runs near the train tracks, and at this time of year it is an absolute explosion of color.

The weather was beautiful, with a light wind pulling the cherry blossoms down in soft waves of white and pastel pink. Like a warm Spring snowfall. It was an absolutely perfect day. The sun was out, the birds were singing, there was a matsuri taking place, and there was a drunk guy running around naked on top of a large dinner party/sightseeing boat.

I kid you not.

And if you need proof, just take a look at the photos in this blog entry.

And seeing that this is a family show, I covered up the "offensive" parts. So all the pictures are fully viable buy even the most prudish of you out there.

I was walking along the river taking pictures of the trees, when out of the corner of my eye I say somebody running around on top of a large dinner cruise boat that was slowly making its way up the river toward Yokohama.

The guy was wearing some bright pink spandex shorts, a headband, and some sort of torso wrap. (I'm not sure if the torso wrap was some sort of bandage or an actual piece of clothing. I am hoping it was a bandage and that they guy was on some sort of strong prescription pain medication. At least that might explain why he was running around naked in front of hundreds of people after drinking only a few beers)

He was still clothed at this time and after a few minutes he decided to take a break and sat down in a plastic lawn chair. One of his friends then turned a video camera on him, and he proceeded to pull down his shorts for the camera. After getting a good reaction from the crowd, he got up from the chair and mooned everyone present. This went over well and everyone present pulled out their cameras (video and still).

This was all the encouragement this guy needed. He slipped off his shorts and started dancing for the crowd, swinging his shorts in a big circle above his head.

After a short stint at hamming it up for the crowd, he started chasing some of the women around the roof of the boat. There was much high pitched squealing punctuated by an occasional "Yada!" and everyone laughed and had a good time.

Then he started to get a little too wild and one of his friends grabbed hi from behind to keep him from accidentally running off the side of the boat and ending up in the river.

He seamed to calm down after this. Especially when one of the guys dowsed his privates with a cold glass full of beer. Oddly enough, this seamed to sober him up a little and he pulled his shorts back on.

The only problem was that he had put them on inside out. After realizing this fact he promptly pulled them back off again, made one more mad dash around the boat, and then put them back on.

Quite a show.

I wonder if he woke up the next morning (with a 4 alarm hangover no doubt) and even remembered what he had done...

If not, I know of a few hundred people who got plenty of pictures and video to refresh his memory.

Ahhh...the freedom of being young and dumb....(Or medicated and intoxicated as the case may be)
